Columbian Squires

Circle 3649

The Augustine Tolton Columbian Squires Circle 3649 was established at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas over 15 years ago. Circle 3649 provides service to Holy Cross Catholic Church in various ways. As a collective, the Squires provide meals for the entire congregation monthly. The Squires also participate in the groundskeeping for the Parish. In addition, the Squires are often called upon as labor for many of Holy Cross’ major activities. The Squires also conduct leadership activities designed to have social impact furthering the works of Jesus Christ.

Circle 3649 is named in honor of  Augustine John Tolton (April 1, 1854 - July 9, 1897), or “Augustus Tolton,” who was the first Roman Catholic priest in the United States publicly known to be black when he was ordained in 1886. Augustine Tolton was a former slave who studied formally in Rome and was ordained in Rome at St. John Lateran church.
